Art in Madison

From: Artist, Pure Carrico RTISTEE@aol.com

Hello, All!
This is just a little notice of events in Madison to keep you in the loop.

Madison has received what we hope is a big Art Boost!  For the first time, a Madison gallery/shop has been included in the Huntsville Holiday Gallery Tour!
Hale Fire Glass, 112 Main Street, in Madison's Historic District, is the place to be on Thursday, December 3, from about 5 p.m. until 9:00 or so.

I am one of the artists who will showing off our fine work, and of course Terry's amazing torch beadwork is lovely eye candy!

Please do drop by - even Mayor Paul Finley stopped into the shop personally to tell Terry that he plans to come in during the Tour to celebrate Madison's getting onto the Art Map, even though there are a couple of other community events that evening.

Beautiful art, tasty snacks, lively conversation - we invite you to come and enjoy with us!
See you there!  Prue

Angel's Island Coffee Features Teresa Batchelor's Artwork

Teresa Batchelor set to exhibit her 'quirky' works

Wednesday, November 25, 2009
By Gregg L. Parker
For the Madison Spirit writeone35758@yahoo.com

Artist says she prefers to create using graphite pencil

Artistic talent runs throughout Teresa Batchelor's family. Her father was a woodcarver, and her son studies and works with graphic design in college.

Batchelor is presenting her one-woman show during November at Angel's Island Coffee, 7538 S. Memorial Parkway in Huntsville, which was named the best coffee in northeast Alabama in The Times Readers Choice Awards.

Batchelor's exhibit ranges from an acrylic of vintage washing machines to landscapes and Christmas selections.

"I have an abstract and pumpkins in colored pencil and two religious pieces in pencil - the empty tomb with the rock and the robe and crown of thorns," she said.

Zentangles or "glorified doodles in ink" are another component of Batchelor's exhibit. "They're quirky, very modern. I imagine most people will really like them - or they won't," she said. Her zentangles were popular at Art on Main in downtown Madison this summer.

Modern Blacksmiths

Iron men give new twist to a time-honored trade

Wednesday, November 25, 2009
By Erica Jacobson
For the Limestone Spirit ericalejacobson@gmail.com

Modern blacksmiths show how it's done; need a candlestick?

As a boy growing up in Lawrence County, Tenn., Bill Richardson and his brother played in the blacksmith shop on their family's farm. The shop was the realm of his father and uncles and was where they turned when a fix for a various piece of farm machinery had to be made.

Richardson's creations weren't nearly so complicated. Instead, he and his brother spent hours pounding out crude tools to present to their father.

"Of course, he'd brag on those screwdrivers," he said. "And then he'd throw them away as soon as we walked away."

For most of his career as an NASA engineer, Richardson's attention was on the stars. His retirement, however, has reunited him with those crude iron bars of his childhood. Now the Athens man and a growing number of others spend hours in front of forges pulling glowing orange metal from smoking piles of bituminous coal before turning to a nearby anvil.

There, they pound, pull, twist and punch metal into knives, candlesticks, fireplace pokers and even their own sets of tools to continue what for some is a trade and for others a hobby.

'I feel so fortunate to have some amazing artists on display'

A Madison stop will be on the map for the 17th annual Huntsville Museum of Art Gallery Tour on Dec. 3 from 5 to 9 p.m.

Hale Fire Glass at 112 Main St. in downtown Madison will welcome guests on the museum tour.

"I'm very honored to be included on this tour with some of the most popular and respected art galleries in the Tennessee Valley," owner Terry Hale said.

Galleries selected for the tour, along with the museum, will be open during those four hours. The event showcases artists skilled in painting, pottery, glass, sculpture, jewelry design, photography and woodworking.

"I feel so fortunate to have some amazing Madison artists on display here in my shop," Hale said. "I'm excited about the opportunity to share their work with art lovers from the greater Huntsville area." Guests can review the art and meet the artists.

Hale wants area residents to realize the bounty of artists in Madison.

"This is also a fun way to say 'Thank you' to all the customers and neighbors here in Madison who believe in the downtown spirit. They have supported us from the day we opened Hale Fire Glass, so this is a gala for those friends, too," Hale said.

HAL - Please support Art in the Tennessee Valley

From: Walt Schumacher waltshoe@comcast.net
Date: November 22, 2009

What is Collector's Draw?

Each year, the Huntsville Art League has a major fundraising event called Collector's Draw. This has been a Huntsville tradition for over 20 years.

The kickoff is in October, when HAL does a "Call for Art" to area artists. Artists donate works of art valued at $150-$300 or more. Starting on Thanksgiving, tickets are sold to the community for $125. Many people make it a tradition to buy tickets as Christmas gifts for friends and family.

HAL continues to collect artwork (usually well over 100 pieces) through the end of the year, and begins to put it up for display in January. In January HAL hosts a great Reception for the ticket holders, which gives them the opportunity to spend time with the art, and do "rankings".

Then early in February, HAL moves all the art to the Von Braun Center, for "The Draw". This event draws over 200 ticket holders and their guests, and is "MC'd" by Steve Johnson of WHNT. One by one, Steve picks tickets at random. The first ticket holder chosen has their pick from all the art. The second person picked gets their choice from the remaining art, etc.

Amazingly, due to the wide variation in taste, most people go home with one of their top 3 picks! This is a fun event that brings patrons back year after year.

Huntsville Museum of Art: On Exhibit The Royal Holloway Collection

EXHIBITION OPENING

Paintings from the Reign of Victoria:The Royal Holloway Collection
November 22

Paintings from the Reign of Victoria:The Royal Holloway Collection opens! Come experience works of art that tell the dramatic stories of the Victorian age. These compelling paintings focus on many varied and contrasting subject matter. The life of the poor and destitute is pictured with the same gusto as royalty. The ferocious nature of wild animals is contrasted with the contentment and loyalty of the domestic pet. And the bustling, domestic natures of a Victorian train station is a stark contrast to the exotic representation of the ancient Babylonian marriage market.

This exhibition includes the most visible and "modern" canvases of the 1880s and includes scenes of contemporary (Victorian) life, historical events, landscapes, animal studes and marine subjects. Not only are the paintings, and the stories behind them, quite varied, they are also some of the largest works the Museum has exhibited. The longest painting is up to 10' long, the tallest close to 7', and the heaviest weighing up to 1000 lbs! The majority of these sixty canvases have never before been exhibited outside of England!

Works by Maria Howard Weeden donated to local library

Weeden works come home

Times Arts Writer jon.busdeker@htimes.com

Watercolor portrait of former slave included in book

Four original paintings by Maria Howard Weeden, including her earliest known watercolor of a former slave, have made it back to Huntsville.

On Thursday, Nashville lawyer Henry Walker donated the rare collection of Weeden works to the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library. The paintings, tied together by a silver ribbon, are part of a poem book called "The Master of the Sheep Fold."

"We are thrilled to have this book back in Huntsville," the library's archivist Ranee Pruitt said. "When I saw this original for the first time, I was breathless."

Walker inherited the book from his father, Hugh Walker, a longtime editor at The Tennessean newspaper who wrote several articles about Weeden and collected her works.

Former art teacher Martha Huie gives nearly 200 works

BOAZ - The wife of the late William Bradford Huie, author of "The Execution of Private Slovik," "Three Lives for Mississippi" and numerous other works, has donated almost 200 books to Snead State Community College in Boaz.

A former art instructor at the college, Martha Huie recently presented her collection of art reference books from her personal art library.

Snead State President Robert Exley said the college appreciates her gift, which will benefit mainly art students.

"She is truly someone who truly cares about (the college) and its success," he said.

Huie, who taught art at Snead in the 1970s, presented her collection to Exley and other school officials this week at the college's Learning Resource Center as they stood before an exhibit about her husband.
